Happy Thursday Lovelies!

Welcome to my stop on Chalk and Notch’s Top Knot Blog Tour! 3 Days, 3 Themes all around creating a version of Romper, Dress and Tunic.

There is also a long sleeve version of each style included in the pattern.

Today’s theme is “Pattern Hack” and I’m excited to share with you my mini hack. It’s always a plus, when you can use a pattern to create something entirely different by making a few small adjustments. Typically when I’m hacking a pattern, I’ll probably use zippers instead of buttons, add pockets where there weren’t any before, or make a sleeved pattern sleeveless – but I wanted to do something a little different this time. When I tested this pattern back in May, I did the Romper version (you can view that post HERE), so I had my mind set on making a maxi dress version for the tour – but along the way I realized that Abigail was in need of some new tops, and why buy them when I could just make them right? So, I hacked the Top Knot Romper, Dress and Tunic into a very simple top.

Can you tell I’m becoming slightly obsessed with mixing fabric patterns and chambray? ;P Here is my hack break down:

  1. I  added an inch more to the hem of the front and back pattern piece to allocate for a hem.
  2. I cut the front pattern piece on the FOLD at the “center front line” which gave me one full front piece (originally it should be two front pieces)
  3. I cut two mirrored pieces of the back pattern and added an inch to the “middle ends” to allocate for a button placket in back and
  4. used bias tape to finish sleeves and hem.

I wanted to keep the elements I liked about the original pattern, so I kept the front pleats, and added two small fabric covered buttons to add a touch of cuteness in place of where the button placket was originally.

I put the button placket in the back,  and of course I used snaps instead of buttons (one day I’ll conquer my fear of unevenly measured button hole spaces) and covered them in matching fabric again. I did a small tutorial on How to Cover Snaps with Fabric HERE when I made the Romper version of this pattern.

Instead of sleeve cuffs, I finished the sleeves with bias tape made from the floral fabric. I also used the same bias tape to finish the hem of the top.

Not a very elaborate hack, but super cute and stylish right?? It’s fun and breezy and she actually wore it the entire afternoon without asking to take it off – these days that’s considered a win! I still want to make the maxi version of this pattern, so you may be seeing that one eventually. 😉
