PDF TOP KNOT ROMPER PATTERN by Chalk and Notch sewn by Candice Ayala PLUS - Tutorial on How to Cover Snaps with Fabric.

TGIF Lovelies!

It’s been a whirlwind of a week around here! Tons of exciting things to come I can’t wait to tell you about, but for today I get to finally share with you the Top Knot Romper, Dress & Tunic by Chalk and Notch I had the pleasure of testing back in April.

“The Top Knot pattern offers 2 romper lengths, 2 dress lengths and a tunic length. All views have a long sleeve option. You can create a casual romper or a formal dress depending on fabric choice and view. And runs from a size 18 month to 12 years”. – cited from chalkandnotch.com

I wear a couple rompers around the house and Abigail has been asking me for one for herself so I was pretty excited when this tester call came around and was selected for the romper version. Even more excited when my Bed of Roses Collection from Michael Miller arrived, it was just perfect for sewing up this romper.

There are so many things I love about this pattern, for one, the length is perfect! Not too short and not too long. I absolutely love the symmetry and stylish factor of the pleats and most importantly the fact that it has POCKETS!

Seriously, isn’t this the most adorable romper ever? I’m thinking of making a maxi version next. If you like it as much as I do, be sure to snag it up while its on sale HERE.

Also, the pattern calls for buttons, but I’m a little skittish when it comes to making button holes so I decided to use snaps instead. And just my luck, I only had red snaps on hand, *womp womp* womp* and then I thought to myself, how hard could it be to cover these snaps with fabric? And it was so super easy, I thought I’d share how I did it with you!

Here’s what you’ll need:

HOW TO COVER SNAPS WITH FABRIC TUTORIAL

  • Fabric of your choice
  • Pronged Snap Fasteners
  • Clear Tacky Glue (Getting the CLEAR one is important. I tried my first set with regular tacky glue but it left a white film over the fabric. The clear one dries on clear, and you can’t even tell glue was used)
  • Fabric Scissors
  • Tools to fasten snaps. (In my case its a hammer tool and a hammer)

STEP 1: Cut fabric into squares (or you can do circles if you’re feeling adventurous) big enough so that the fabric can be folded under and through the prongs.

STEP 2: Apply a generous amount of CLEAR tacky glue to the top of the snap. Generous is key – you want it so that when you press the fabric on top of the snap some of it spills over the sides and unto the bottom where the prongs are,  this will help to keep the fabric fastened all around.

STEP 3: Position your fabric on to the snap and press down.

STEP 4: Once you find the position you like, press down firmly. With your fingertips/nails shape out the sides of the snap and feed/press the ends of the fabric through the prongs. Hold this for a minute or so, so the fabric can take it’s shape while the glue dries. You can set it aside to fully dry after a few minutes.

STEP 5: Once dried, snip off the ends. Try to take out as much of the bulk as you can from the middle of the snap and in-between the prongs without going too close to the edges.

STEP 6: Fasten the snap as you normally would and WALLAH you’ve got yourself a custom covered snap!

I love snaps, they are so much easier than button holes, and now that I’ve discovered I can customize outfits this way, I may go a little snap covering crazy! haha!

And that’s it for today’s post!  Thank you for stopping today! I hope you found this tutorial helpful and remember, you can grab your copy of the Top Knot Romper Dress and Tunic HERE while it’s still on sale. I hope you have a safe and wonderful weekend! Talk to you soon! xoxo
